Removal Orders

  • A pauper was considered to be the responsibility of his parish of legal settlement when in need of parish relief.
  • An order would be made for him to be "removed" to his last parish of legal settlement
  • He could be escorted there by the Constable (being passed from parish to parish and handed over at the boundary)
  • These documents are often found in the Parish Chest or mentioned in Quarter Sessions
